In recent years, the construction of showers without a prefabricated tray has increased considerably. But how to ensure good waterproofing?

Every day more and more people prefer a built-in shower to a traditional system with a prefabricated tray. There is a wide range of ceramic tiles with the entire range of special pieces, as well as systems of screens and light partitions, which allow the manufacture of completely customised showers, without barriers.

Especially in renovation, many people want to tear out the old shower tray or bathtub and replace it with a large built-in shower. But when it comes to the bathroom of a house located in an apartment, on many occasions the desire for a built-in shower does not come true for fear of possible water leaks that could affect it. On the other hand, we observe that in the construction of hospitals and geriatrics, as well as in a growing number of changing rooms and common shower areas in general, the application of barrier-free construction showers is mandatory, since a prefabricated dish can become an obstacle for sick people, the elderly, the disabled, etc.

To effectively solve the waterproofing of built-in shower trays, there are easy-to-install waterproofing systems.

System Description

AIKIT is a solution that integrates waterproofing with the drain to provide waterproof protection for areas of the floor with water evacuation, such as built-in shower trays.

It is made up of a waterproof sheet of suitable dimensions, an element for water evacuation and a system of union and sealing between the two.

AIKIT and some of its components are patented products (patent no. 200602747)

This system provides the factory sealing of the union of the sheet with the evacuation element, guaranteeing a perfect watertightness of the shower tray through a quick and easy installation.

It is a practical and economical solution

With the appropriate model in the range and a standard floor thickness of 9 mm, you can create shower trays flush with the floor, with less than 10 cm of total height of the installation and with the possibility of choosing between several options in terms of shape, size and finish of the grid.

In addition, the solution with AIKIT is cheaper than with other systems, although they may seem cheaper. Savings are made in the total bill of materials and work by reducing costs due to the need for less labor, less thickness in the solution with lower consumption of materials and taking less time to finish the jobs.

AIKIT offers multiple options to adapt it to the most common needs in installations: up to 4 m2 of built-in waterproofing. Spot or linear drainage. AIKIT brings together 2 concepts: incorporating waterproofing into the drain (this already existed with PVC sheets) and taking advantage of the waterproofing way with WATER-STOP. With the development of a proprietary technique to join and seal the film to the evacuation element at the factory, a new product for shower trays was achieved (the only one patented in Spain for this function) that has become the benchmark for others that have subsequently arrived at this type of solution.

It's an easy solution

It is very easy to install. To install AIKIT, do not use products or tools that require special precautions. Depending on the model, the drain is connected by gluing with PVC adhesive or by pressure using a sleeve. Waterproofing is applied by gluing it to the substrate with C2 type adhesive cement and a notched trowel. You don't have to work with fire, solvents, toxic or dangerous products.

It's a safe solution

It solves the 2 most problematic aspects for those who install waterproofing:

• The waterproofing of the waterproof protection to the sump: gluing and sealing at the factory with the manufacturer's warranty gives the assurance that you are doing a good job.
• Watertightness in corners and at floor/wall joints: this is easily achieved thanks to the characteristics and properties of the WATER-STOP sheet and its accessories.

Uses and applications

To be easily installed in construction showers, adapted bathrooms, collective showers, built-in bathtubs, and also laundry rooms, container rooms, industrial kitchens, fishmongers, cutting rooms, workshops, and any premises with floor drainage and that needs waterproof protection.

To prevent damage from infiltration damp, it is highly recommended to also treat the walls of shower areas, especially at water intakes, with the WATER-STOP film that is available in rolls and in the form of special pieces.

In the very common case of bathroom renovation, in which the bathtub is removed to create a large and comfortably accessible shower area, if the shower tray can be installed at the same nivel as the rest of the floor, it will be more comfortable and safe, as well as being in line with the most current aesthetic trends in the design of bathroom spaces.

The main difficulty in avoiding having to make steps is usually in the height necessary for the installation of the drainage elements and the impemeabilization systems.

With other types of sheeting, a layer of mortar several cm thick has to be built on top of the waterproofing and wait for it to harden before laying the pavement.

In AIKIT systems, the WATER-STOP sheet that they incorporate allows finishes with minimal thickness because the flooring is placed directly on it, without further layers.

For the evacuation element that is integrated, AIKIT offers different options in terms of technical and aesthetic characteristics, with minimum installation heights from 95mm from the bottom of the bowl flush with the floor.

Installation procedure

1. Make the mortar support base.

• With slopes of at least 1% and reserving a space to receive the bowl with a minimum height of 95 mm at the point of the drain intake.

2. Install the drain:

• Cancel the outlet, vertical/horizontal, that is not appropriate by sealing it by gluing it with the attached cap.
• Verify that the drain pipe has the appropriate slope towards the evacuation or downspout.
• Connect the outlet of the bowl to the drain pipe by gluing, using, if applicable, the 50/40 reduction that is included.

3. Install waterproof sheet:

• Glue the sheet with C2 adhesive cement on the clean and dry mortar surface.
• Extend the excess sheet vertically on the walls by a minimum of 10 cm.

4. Lay the lining:

• Stick directly on the sheet horizontally and vertically with C2 type cement glue.
• Grouting the frame to the floor with elastic putty and placing the grid.
