A glass of pure water is transparent. It has no smell, no taste, and no color. Or so it seems to us at first glance, but why do we see the pool water and the sea blue?
The blue color of the water is due to the Rayleigh scattering effect.
Water absorbs long-wave lengths of light (red, orange, yellow) more easily than short-wave ones (blue, violet).
The unabsorbed (blue) shortwavelengths of light bounce off and in doing so we pick them up with our eyes. There we have the beautiful blue tones of the water.
The effect increases with the amount of water. For this reason, at a shallow depth, less than 50 cm approximately, we do not perceive it and see the water transparent.
So thanks to Professor Rayleigh, Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904, we can discard the myth that water is blue only because it reflects the sky as if it were a mirror.
