Heat transfer occurs in 3 possible ways:

  • Conduction: transfer of heat from one body to another by contact.
  • Convection: heat transfer produced through the displacement of a mass of air or fluid to areas with different temperatures.
  • Radiation: The transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves through a vacuum or a fluid medium.

"Traditional" insulators are effective only by acting on the heat received by conduction and convection, but they do not act on heat transfer by radiation.

Reflective insulators are effective against tres types of heat transfer.

By means of the outer sheets of pure aluminium, 97% of the heat received by radiation is reflected, while with the inner dry air sheet(s) there are no temperature changes between both sides of the insulation and consequently, heat transfer by conduction/convection.
